How it works

What's actually happening to your photo

Most "free" photo tools quietly upload your images to a server somewhere, process them remotely, and send the result back. CutClean doesn't do that. Everything — the upscaling, the background key-out, the watermark stamping and healing — runs as JavaScript inside the browser tab you're using right now, using your device's own processor. There's no upload step because there's nowhere for the image to go; it never leaves your machine.

That has a couple of practical side effects worth knowing. First, speed: there's no queue, no waiting on a server that might be busy with someone else's job — processing starts the instant you click. Second, privacy: if you're working with client photos, unreleased product shots, or anything else you'd rather not hand to a third-party server, CutClean simply isn't in a position to see it, store it, or leak it, because it's never transmitted anywhere.

How the upscaler works

When you choose 2× or 4×, the browser's canvas engine redraws your image at the larger size using high-quality resampling, then a sharpening pass (an "unsharp mask," the same technique used in traditional photo editing software) is applied on top to counteract the softness that comes from simply stretching pixels. It's not generative AI adding invented detail — it's a genuinely larger, cleaner version of what was already there.

02 — BACKGROUND

How background removal works

Click anywhere on the background and CutClean samples that colour, then scans every pixel in the image comparing how close its colour is to the one you picked — pixels within your tolerance setting become transparent. It's the same principle as a green-screen key. The feather slider softens the cut-off edge so it doesn't look jagged. It works best on plain or evenly lit backgrounds; busy ones may need a second click to clean up stragglers.

03 — WATERMARK

How watermarking works

Adding a watermark draws your text directly onto the image canvas at the size, angle, and opacity you set. Removing one works differently: you paint over the area you want gone, and CutClean repeatedly blends each marked pixel with its unmarked neighbours until the patch smooths into its surroundings — closer to a digital "healing brush" than true AI reconstruction, so it shines on simple backgrounds and struggles on fine detail.

Common questions

Is CutClean actually free?

Yes — all three tools work with no sign-up. Exports are capped at 1080px on the free tier; unlocking full resolution takes either a small one-off credit, watching a short ad, or a Pro subscription for unlimited full-res exports. The core tools themselves are never paywalled.

Do you store or see my photos?

No. Processing happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript's Canvas API — your image is never uploaded to a server, so we have no copy of it and no way to access it. Closing the tab discards everything.

What image formats does it support?

JPG, PNG, and WebP for upload. Exports are PNG, which supports transparency — important for the background remover, since a JPG export can't have a see-through background.

Why didn't the background remover get everything?

The tool keys out colour by similarity rather than detecting "what is the subject" the way a full AI segmentation model would. It's very effective on plain, evenly lit backgrounds — studio shots, product photos, flat-colour logos — but busy or textured backgrounds (hair, foliage, patterned fabric) may need a couple of extra clicks with the tolerance slider adjusted, or won't fully separate from the subject.

Does the upscaler add new detail, or just resize?

It resizes using high-quality resampling with sharpening applied on top — a real, cleaner enlargement, but not generative AI inventing texture that wasn't in the original. If you need that (for very heavily degraded source images, for example), that's a different category of tool, sometimes called AI super-resolution.

Can I use CutClean on my phone?

Yes — it runs in any modern mobile browser. Processing speed depends on your device's hardware, so very large images may take a moment longer on a phone than a desktop.

Can I use the results commercially?

Yes. You retain full rights to whatever you upload and export — CutClean doesn't claim any ownership over your images and doesn't add any licensing restriction on top of what you already had.

Is there a limit to image size?

Very large images are automatically scaled down before processing to keep things fast and avoid crashing your browser tab, and upscale output is capped at a generous maximum resolution. For most photography and product-shot use cases this won't be noticeable.
